“It hasn’t affected me, so the news must be wrong.”

That appears to more and more be the refrain that people are singing.

“Crime hasn’t affected me or anyone I know, so it’s not as bad as it is made out to be.”

“No one I know has been infected with Covid-19, so the numbers reported are a lie.”

That last sentence is what prompted me. The infection numbers for our province went up, but people are still in denial. They are in denial, simply because they have not been affected directly. They are in denial simply because no one they know has been affected.

It is the same with all the looting and riots that went on last week. Their suburbs or towns were not directly affected, therefore it wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be.

Most people tend to forget that all of what happened will have an impact, either directly or indirectly. In our town, we were not directly affected by the looting and riots, but I am still cognizant that there will be a knock-on effect on the supply chain.

We are all going to be affected at the end of the day. Nothing happens in isolation. Or, as the saying goes “No man is an island”.
