The question “What if?” is often a bit of a double edged sword.
More often that not it’s used in the sense of regret or missed opportunities.
What if I’d taken that job?
What if I’d done this, that, or the other?
Answering the question “what if?” never gives us a definitive answer, and therein lies much of the problem.
What if I had done the thing, and I was happy for a bit before it all went pear-shaped? What would I do then?
“What if?” can also be useful for us, or at least me to work out the pros and cons of making some decisions. Generally, only the potentially life altering decisions.
The opposite of “What if?” is certainty. The one thing life never is. Life is never certain. We can only try to make the best of what’s given to us at any given time.
What if it doesn’t work out? That seems scary. But what if it all does work out the way it was meant to in the end? What if this was the best thing you ever did?
