There is an improv technique called “Yes, and…”

The idea is to acknowledge what the other person is saying, and not negating what they are saying, but adding to it.

I have noticed that I used a slightly similar, but different technique when presented with certain ideas. I have especially noted this when I am speaking to my psychologist.

I listen to the idea, and say “Yes, but…”

I hear the idea. I acknowledge the idea. However, I can also see problems with the idea from my point of view.

I do not always think the other person is incorrect with their way of thinking. Or that I am more correct than they are.

I could say “yes, and…”, however, for me it is usually a “yes, but…”
